Book bans targeting LGBTQ+ materials have been all over the news, giving the mistaken impression that book bans are “just an LGBTQ+ issue”. At Crook County Library, members of the community wanted to segregate LGBTQ+ materials in the children’s room, threatening our participation in our library cooperative and our official status as a public library (OAR 543-010-0036). Such far-reaching consequences demonstrate that book bans are an “everyone” issue. We would like to tell everyone’s story, from library workers to board members to supporters: how the threat of book bans affected people personally, and where we go from here.
