Building Diverse & Engaging School Libraries

Speakers: Kate Jacobson Dutro, Reynolds School District; Jennifer McKenzie, Siuslaw School District; Ayn Reyes Frazee, Portland Public Schools

Description:
Libraries are for everyone, especially school libraries! Part 1 of this three-part pre-conference will begin with an actionable plan to train staff about conducting a diversity audit of your collection. Part 2 will have us “walk through” a library site with an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion lens, and explore ways to bring in students and stakeholders to evaluate and design your space, including displays. This session utilizes a checklist developed by OLA that is tailored to school libraries. Part 3 focuses on building and utilizing a diverse and engaging collection for students and staff that supports Programs and storytime. While the pre-conference focuses on school libraries, the tools and ideas can be used in other libraries.
